North Carolina State Building Code Council Votes to Adopt Child Electrical Safety Requirement

The North Carolina State Building Code Council took a great stride in child electrical safety Tuesday, voting to adopt the 2008 National Electrical Code® (NEC) with its tamper-resistant outlet requirement included. The Council voted to adopt the Code during a work session at the State Legislature Building, and enforcement is scheduled to begin June 1.

NEMA Launches "Real Safety" Campaign

According to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission data, approximately 2,400 children suffer electrical injuries each year from incidents involving electrical outlets or receptacles. This has prompted a new Code requirement, effective under the 2008 National Electrical Code®< (NEC) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has developed an educational campaign to generate awareness.
